VOLUNTEER SERVICE AND SUPPORT NEPAL
VILLAGE BUILDING PROGRAM (September 29, 2006 )
A group of tourists travelling with 'The Imaginative Traveller' Company based in England; arrived in Chapagaun village on September 11th to work as volunteers building a wall at community health center. This project was set up by Volunteer Service & Support Nepal (VSSN) with the physical labour and generous financial support of The Imaginative Traveller's volunteer team. For the travellers, the project was not merely the construction of the much needed perimeter wall but also an introduction to the Nepalese community and life in the rural areas. This community construction program gave the volunteers a golden opportunity to see and learn about the Nepalese society, their culture, food, lifestyle and traditions. These volunteers, coming from many different nations, worked with utmost enthusiasm and were extremely happy to stay with the local families for a week, sharing food and fun. Everyday was a new and exciting day for those who chose to spend their well earned holidays in Nepal trying to help improve the village life. They liked the idea of killing two birds with a stone. Besides working with the villagers, the team of volunteers also hiked around the surrounding hills lead by a local guide – this reward provided them an opportunity to have leisurely time to stand and stare at nature in all its splendour. This four hour trek is just the beginning of their two week trek with our partner travel company to Ghorepani, a shorter version of Annapurna circuit.
Village Build Programme (November 4 to 12, 2006)
The second group was involved in the second phase of the security wall at the same location and project site in Chapagaun village. After completion of the wall the community health centre looked much nicer and safer. The second group was also placed with Nepali host families where they had dinner with their hosts. In this group most of the participants were involved in bricklaying, laying of stones and also mixing sand and cement. All participants worked physically on a daily basis for five to six hours. In their leisure time volunteers went exploring beautiful villages, temples, monasteries and heritage sites. They also participated in cultural and musical ceremonies with local groups. For fun volunteer groups played football and other outdoor activities with school children at local schools. It was a great experience for the volunteers to give some toys, pencils and educational kits to local children, and these items the volunteers brought with them. News of this was also highlighted in a popular Nepali TV channel ‘Kantipur TV'.
